Today is November 11, 2007. Today marks the end of hostilities in World War 1, which officially ended with the signing of the Armistice at 11am November 11, 1918. This brought to an end a war spanning four years that claimed the lives of some 8 million people. It did bring about the beginning of teh end of European colonial rule but also ushered in the United States as a global force, having suffered the least of all Allied nations and supplying it's allies with weapons and munitions.
In Australia, we remember the soldiers (the 'digger' myth began with the storming of the beach at Gallipoli for no tactical gain) that died in the First War by observing one minute of silence at 11am. It is not a public holiday, unlike most other countries that commerorate the end of the war.
In Korea, it is Peppero Day. Like Valentine's Day but in November. I am somewhat disappointed (so far) because I only got one Peppero this year. But it was from my best and favourite former student who also won the speaking competition at my school.
