Sillim 번게

I went to have sundae 순대 last week in Sillim-dong. Sillim is famous for sundae and 보신당 which is dog meat soup. And before anyone tries to lynch me, consider how your grain-fed steak is grown or how you get your eggs and poultry. In case you were ignorant of this fact, grain-fed steak is from cows that are fed grain along with growth hormones in feed lots before being sent to the abattoir. Hardly natural. Incidentally, the stem for abattoir comes from the French word 'to beat down' which succinctly describes how cattle are slaughtered.

Anyway, I had sundae once before but even my Korean friends said there was much better available. So I decided to give it another try. At the dinner were the overseer (who coincidentally lives in Sillim) and vice-overseer of the English club which made this 번게 feel like a Politburo meeting. We were later joined by one of our new members who was privy to the workings of the club. Her stock is rising as new members do not usually meet socially once the scheduled meetings are finished. Especially since she had to travel even further than I did to be there.

Here are some photos.

This is eaten in much the same way one eats samgyeopsal 삼겹살. You have some sesame leaves and lettuce leaves with toenjang 된장 and a choice of two hot sauces. The owner of this restaurant was surprised I could eat the extra hot sauce. It tasted better anyway.

The verdict: Glad I tried it again but the company was far greater than the taste.
