Week Wrap-Up

Long time since the last post, and much has happened.

There was a protest by Muslim students about the reprinting of that cartoon. They were waving placards saying "Freedom of Speech, not freedom to offend". Curiously, one is a right while the other a choice of the observer. Besides, I'm sure tolerance is one of the tenets of Islam as well as Christianity.

The Olympic Flame was lit in Olympia despite a minor interruption by Tibetan sympathisers. The flame symbolises the fire kept burning in the sanctuary during the games. Obviously, modern times have led to the games becoming politicised (Moscow and Los Angeles, and possibly Beijing) though not so different to what one may think.

One of my students, when I asked him how he was feeling today as we do at the beginning of every class, replied that he was "Flying because my mom gave me ice." I'm sure he meant ice-cream, but who knows with kids and what they get into these days.

I get my new classes tomorrow. The one of particular interest is the 6-2 class. They have had four teachers in just over a year. Three have either been fired or done a midnight run. Curiously, they have all been sitting at the desk across from mine. Now, I am in that seige perilous so whenever one of the supervisors says "See you tomorrow" I always reply with "Maybe".
