This place is special to me because months ago when I was wondering around here contemplating whether I should find somewhere else to work an elderly man approached me and asked if i could "inspect" his speech. I find this odd as if I'm on a bus the seat next to me will always be the last to be filled (this would happen in Sydney too) and yet I get random people asking me to do things. Anyway, this man had most likely written a speech using a dictionary only since I could barely make any sense of what he was trying to convey. What I did understand was that he had been a worker at a Samsung factory and he was worried that the government's stance (at that time) towards North Korea would endanger his job/life and that of many other Samsung workers. His main problem was that if the two Koreas were unified workers from North Korea would work for much less than he would and thus become more attractive to the chaebols.
In the end he thanked me for my efforts and as I was exiting the park I noticed riot police lining up in front of the police buses (which were not there when I went into the park). These buses are armored and have metal screens on the windows. Luckily for me, the man did not make the speech that day. But one wonders...
